The night was still and cold and Irena and I walked for an hour beneath the shimmering sky, the subtle shades of a curtain aurora beginning to heat on the northern horizon. When I felt her grow cold, we started back.

I stopped at the edge of the lawn. I’d heard a familiar sound, thought of something I needed to share.

I gave a soft howl. Concentrating on the pack I’d sensed nearby, I took her hand and waited.

They came from between the trees, four graceful gray shapes barely distinguishable from the snow or the frost-coated trees. As they neared us, Irena moved closer to me. –My mother’s pets,– I told her and rested my hand on the largest one; the grey-furred creature Helen called Gandolph.

–Can I touch him?–

–He knows you’re with me. But move slowly or he’ll run.–

She did as I directed, laying a bare hand on his back, feeling the coarse coat, the softer winter fur beneath.

The other three kept their distance, moving to the edge of the trees, stopping there. As the last joined them, they turned and disappeared.
